UMRAN 2012

The seminar is organized by the Department of Landscape Architecture, Kulliyyah of Architecture and Environmental Design, IIUM with the collaboration and support from the five departments in KAED namely Dept. of Architecture, Dept. of Urban and Regional Planning, Dept. of Quantity Surveying, Dept. of Applied Arts and Design and Dept. of Building, Technology & Engineering.

Scope of the seminar:
The seminar is outlined from these several themes as follows:

Main Theme : Green Wave

Main Theme UMRAN 2012: GREEN WAVE

‘Green’ is a colour in the spectrum that is often associated with the environment at its natural state.  Before human interventions, the earth is already at its most stable condition.  However, due to arising problems and issues in the built environment, places, people and their surroundings are struggling to exist with balance.  If we can remove, minimize and rectify the damages that result from improper development, we can help the earth to slowly restore its balanced state.

A ‘wave’ of collaboration between the different fields in the built environment and the contributions of multi-disciplinary research and knowledge are highly needed in the efforts of making the environment better.  Collectively, ‘Green Wave’ aspires to share approaches and some ideas for solutions for the persisting environmental and place degradation, while at the same time to continue promoting local and global awareness towards our environment.

Sub-theme 1: Green Protocol

‘Green Protocol’ represent the rules and practices applied in the fields of built environment.  For instance, specific regulations or guidelines might be needed to plan for specific developments to ensure that they do not cause negative impacts to the environment, its users and habitats.  Certain enviro-technology, green technology, planning procedures and design guidelines might be relevant to foster better sustainable management of resources.

            Sub-theme 2: Conducive Living Environment

‘Conducive Living Environment’ highlights a condition that does not only meet the needs and comfort of human, but also the environment.  There has been a rising concern over the effects of climate change, massive development, and pollutions towards our environment.  On the other hand, there is also a rising demand for a healthier and more conducive living spaces, whether indoor or outdoor.   Therefore, alternative approaches are much needed in creating a better and more conducive living environment.

        Sub-theme 3: Designing Our Future

‘Designing Our Future’ embraces the creativity needed in conquering the vision of the future within the scope of built environment.  The future needs ideas that are innovative and revolutionary.  At the same time, we have to offer solutions to the present problems while anticipating challenges that will come in due course.  Therefore, sustainable design ideas and solutions are essential components that need to be incorporated from the present to the future.

            Sub-theme 4: Fostering Sustainability

‘Fostering Sustainability’ reflects sustainability as the key component in any development, which has been emphasized since the rapid growth of urbanization and mass development.  It emphasizes our responsibilities as landscape architects, architects, planners, surveyors and designers in working skillfully with the earth’s resources, not only for the present but also for the future.  As professionals in the built environment, we must strategize different ways of how sustainability can be practiced and implemented as an on-going process.

Objectives of the seminar:

  • To provide a platform for discussion and knowledge sharing on the current development and environmental issues, application of current technology in built environment, and the roles of mankind in the built environment.
  • To disseminate research findings and implementation on current research conducted on built environment.
  • To bring together the research conducted especially at the undergraduate level in a day seminar.
  • To provide a platform for exchange of ideas between students, academics, professionals, government officers in Malaysia and elsewhere on built environment issues in Malaysia.
